Most growing stores run brilliantly on standard Shopify. But at a certain scale, Shopify Plus unlocks capabilities that pay for the step up. Here’s how to tell which you need.

When standard Shopify is plenty

For most retailers turning over up to a few million a year, Shopify’s standard plans do everything you need: fast hosting, a great checkout, thousands of apps and all the tools to sell and market. Don’t pay for Plus you won’t use.

When Shopify Plus earns its keep

Consider Plus if you need:

  • Checkout customisation — Shopify Functions and custom checkout logic (discounts, validation, delivery rules).
  • B2B / wholesale — native B2B with company accounts, price lists and net terms.
  • International scale — multiple markets, currencies and dedicated storefronts.
  • Automation — Shopify Flow to automate operations, fraud rules and merchandising.
  • Higher volume — more staff accounts, higher API limits and priority support.

What about cost?

Standard Shopify is a modest monthly fee; Plus is a bigger commitment. The question isn’t the sticker price — it’s whether the extra capability drives enough additional revenue or efficiency to justify it. For high-volume and B2B brands, it usually does.

The honest answer

Most stores should start (or migrate to) standard Shopify and move to Plus when they hit a real limit. If you’re replatforming, we’ll recommend the right tier as part of your Shopify migration — no upselling you into Plus you don’t need.
