The single biggest fear retailers have about moving to Shopify is losing their Google rankings — and it’s a fair fear. A botched migration can wipe out organic traffic overnight. But it’s entirely avoidable. Here’s the process we use to migrate stores to Shopify while protecting (and often improving) organic revenue.

Why migrations hurt SEO

Rankings drop during a migration for predictable reasons: URLs change without redirects, metadata gets lost, page structure changes, internal links break, or the new site is slower. Every one of these is preventable with planning.

1. Map every URL — before anything else

Before any design work begins, crawl the existing site and export a complete inventory of URLs: products, collections, content pages, blog posts and images. This becomes the master list that nothing is allowed to fall off.

2. Build a complete 301 redirect plan

Every old URL must point to its closest equivalent on the new Shopify store via a 301 (permanent) redirect. This passes ranking signals from the old page to the new one. Generic “redirect everything to the homepage” shortcuts are how stores lose rankings — map them properly.

3. Preserve on-page SEO

Migrate the elements Google reads:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions
  • Heading structure (H1s, H2s)
  • Image alt text and, where possible, filenames
  • Structured data for products, reviews and breadcrumbs

4. Don’t lose your content

Buying guides, category copy and blog content earn rankings. Migrate them deliberately — don’t let them quietly disappear in the rebuild.

5. Make the new store faster

A migration is the perfect moment to win on speed. Shopify is fast by default; build a lean theme, keep apps disciplined, and you’ll often pass Core Web Vitals more comfortably than you did on your old platform — a ranking and conversion win.

6. Test everything in staging

Before launch, verify redirects resolve, tracking fires, structured data validates, and the store works across devices. Nothing goes live until it’s checked.

7. Monitor obsessively after launch

For the first two weeks, watch redirects, rankings, crawl errors and conversion daily in Google Search Console and analytics. Catch and fix issues fast, while they’re small.

The takeaway

Migrating to Shopify doesn’t have to cost you rankings. Treat SEO as the first priority rather than a clean-up job, and organic traffic transfers intact.
